Frostmas on the Flower Farm
Yes, you read that right- Frostmas, not Christmas! We flower farmers have a name for the frost that brings the growing season to a close: Frostmas. Equal parts magic and melancholy.
There’s something magical about the farm when the frost arrives. Every morning, the flowers sparkle with tiny ice crystals, turning the beds into a glittering wonderland. Even the smallest leaves look like they’ve been dusted with fairy dust.
This frosty beauty also signals the end of the growing season for some of our favourites. With the first hard frosts nipping the dahlia tops, it’s time to start digging them up for winter storage. I’ll carefully lift each tuber, brush off the soil, and tuck them away in a cool, dry spot until next spring. It’s a bit of a bittersweet task - saying goodbye to the vibrant summer colours, while looking forward to a fresh start next year.
The frost also gives a special charm to flowers that linger into late autumn. Each crystal-covered petal makes a perfect photo opportunity, capturing the fleeting magic of the season. I love wandering the paths with my camera, finding unexpected patterns and sparkles on everything from cosmos to chrysanthemums.
Frostmas reminds me that even as the growing season ends, there’s still beauty to enjoy - and plenty of planning to do for next year’s blooms. For now, I’ll enjoy the quiet, frosty mornings and the glittering landscape before the snow comes (if it comes!).
