Why I Grow British Flowers

For me, it comes down to one simple thing: flowers are at their best when they're grown close to home.

The flowers I grow at Cicely Flowers are harvested just a few metres from where they're sold. They're picked at the right stage, conditioned carefully, and often on the flower stand within a day of being cut.

Because they haven't travelled thousands of miles, they retain all the things that make flowers so special - movement, fragrance, character and seasonality.

British-grown flowers also connect us to the seasons. The flowers available in June are different from those in September, and that's part of their beauty. Rather than expecting the same flowers all year round, we can enjoy each season for what it offers - from spring tulips and peonies to late summer dahlias and chrysanthemums.

When you buy locally grown flowers, there's a real person behind every bunch. Rather than travelling through a complex supply chain, they're grown and harvested by local growers who care deeply about the flowers they produce and the communities they serve.

Many British flower growers work in ways that support pollinators, improve soil health and encourage biodiversity. My own flowers are grown here in Bradford on Avon using seasonal growing methods, with the aim of working alongside nature rather than against it.

Most of all, I think British-grown flowers simply feel different. They have a natural, garden-gathered quality that reflects the time and place they were grown.

They're not perfect, and that's exactly why I love them.

Each stem tells the story of the season.
