Spring Flower Pairings: What Blooms Well Together
Spring is such a joyful time on the farm—the flower beds are waking up, and there’s a wonderful mix of colours, shapes, and fragrances starting to appear. Up until April, most of what’s available on my Bradford on Avon flower patch are the “squeaky stem” flowers: snowdrops, muscari, daffodils, and tulips. They’re early, cheerful, and full of charm, but now we’re moving into the slightly later spring blooms—ranunculus, anemones, wallflowers, and soon dianthus—so the palette and textures are starting to expand.
One of my favourite parts of this season is experimenting with different flower pairings, whether it’s for a simple vase at home or a DIY bucket. Seeing which blooms naturally complement each other is part of the fun of spring flowers!
Some of My Favourite Early Spring Pairings
Ranunculus + Anemone: Both delicate and bright, ranunculus with their layered petals look beautiful alongside the bold centres of anemones. This combination gives a mix of texture and colour that feels cheerful and fresh.
Wallflowers + Dianthus: The sweet scent of wallflowers pairs beautifully with the soft, frilly petals of dianthus. These two together add both fragrance and charm to a spring bouquet.
Clusters of One Flower: Sometimes a simple arrangement of just one flower type, like a bunch of ranunculus or anemones, can have a real statement impact. It’s minimal but so effective.
Tips for Arranging Flowers at Home
Think About Shape and Height: Mix taller stems with shorter ones to give your bouquet a natural, relaxed look.
Vary Colours and Textures: Combining soft pastels with brighter tones adds interest. Layered petals, round blooms, and spikier stems all add texture.
Start Small: Especially with early spring blooms, you don’t need a huge bouquet to make an impact—smaller arrangements can be just as striking.
Making it Easy with DIY Buckets and Subscriptions
One of the great things about my DIY buckets and flower subscriptions is that they take the guesswork out of pairing flowers. Each week, I handcraft bouquets from what’s at its best in the season, so you get a mix of blooms that naturally look lovely together. And if you’re trying a DIY bucket at home, it’s a fun way to experiment with combinations you might not usually try.
Spring is the perfect season to play with flowers, mix and match, and bring a little bit of joy into your home. I love seeing which pairings people enjoy the most—sometimes the simplest combinations can be the most striking!
